GULF STREAM IMPACT ASESSMENTSummer 2010 CIOERT Scientific Cruise Mission Overview A science team aboard the Research Vessel Seward Johnson left the dock at Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Fort Pierce, Florida on Friday, July 9, for the eastern Gulf of Mexico to gather baseline biological and environmental data against which to measure change if oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill reaches the area. The expedition will employ Harbor Branch's Johnson-Sea-Link manned research submersible, a remotely operated undersea vehicle, and other technology to assess and record conditions in the water column and on deep coral and live-bottom reefs. The information collected using these tools will provide a better understanding of the spill's actual and potential environmental effects. The month-long mission is funded by NOAA's Cooperative Institute for Ocean Exploration, Research and Technology (CIOERT) and is led by FAU Harbor Branch and the University of North Carolina, Wilmington (UNCW). Other partners include SRI International out of St. Petersburg, Fla. and the University of Miami. Grupo Cepemar joins as an expedition partner by making the ship, which they have chartered for work in Brazil, available for this important scientific mission. Follow along with the science team via daily field dispatches on the CIOERT website (link below) and through regular mission updates posted to the Harbor Branch website.
