@Sea Correspondent -- Jim Masterson
Dr. Jim Masterson is a biologist and educational media specialist with the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution Media Lab. Jim received his Ph.D. in experimental marine ecology from Florida Institute of Technology in 1997. He has served as an author and programmer of marine science-focused educational CD-ROM's produced by the Media Lab. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Florida Institute of Technology Division of Marine and Environmental Systems. While pursuing his degree, Jim instructed a variety of biology and ecology subjects at graduate, undergraduate, and secondary school levels. While teaching, Jim began exploring the new possibilities offered through the creation of custom, interactive multimedia educational tools. The complementary interests in science, education, and digital media innovation find Jim well-suited to the role of @Sea correspondent. Along with the rest of the Media Lab @Sea Team, Jim enjoys the challenge of bringing the research activities of premier marine scientists to a larger audience. Jim's first outing was aboard the R/V SEWARD JOHNSON in 1993, as a field research assistant to HBOI scientist and Marine Science Division Director Dr. Dennis Hanisak. The focus of that work was submersible-based research on deep-water macroalgal photosynthesis in Jamaica. Although he has been eagerly anticipating the chance to serve as @Sea correspondent on the current mission, he also secretly hopes he'll find opportunities to put down the cameras and "get wet and dirty" as he lends a hand to the scientists.
