CUSTOMARY VISIT
Mission Dispatch 9 - April 12, 2005 | Mark Schrope - @SEA Correspondent
Freeport, Bahamas

Today was our last day of operations in the Bahamas. We did one JSL submersible dive near Freeport with Shirley Pomponi and Don Liberatore in the sphere. They dove 2,100 feet and found a rock ledge after traversing a flat, silty slope.

One of their more unusual finds was a sponge that looked like a bird's nest with a fringe of spicules around it. The species was not immediately obvious, so Shirley will be working to identify it.

About midday, we entered the port at Freeport for brief time on shore. Those people not on duty with the ship went ashore and caught cabs to the marina town of Lucaya for our first time ashore since leaving Florida. By 8:00 everyone was back on board to cross back over the Straits of Florida and the Gulf Stream.

Weather reports are looking good. The passage should be relatively calm the whole way. Tomorrow we will clear customs at Port Everglades, then the team will begin exploring the deep waters of the Miami Terrace.
