THE MAINE EVENT: FALL 2002 Predation by Gelatinous Zooplankton in the Gulf of Maine Mission Specs: When: August 31, 2002 to September 23, 2002 Where: Gulf of Maine - Georges Bank Region Who: Dr. Marsh Youngbluth - HARBOR BRANCH Oceanographic - Water Column Ecology Dept. What: Predation by gelatinous zooplankton ( siphonophore Nanomia cara )
Summary From August 31 to September 23, 2002, HARBOR BRANCH research scientist Dr. Marsh Youngbluth and a team of collaborators will conduct part three of a three-year, multi-seasonal investigation into the ecological effects of predation by gelatinous zooplankton in the Gulf of Maine. The research will be accomplished using the JOHNSON SEA-LINK (JSL) manned submersible, which will allow these scientists to gain a better understanding of the distribution and behavior of pelagic animals that are too delicate to be adequately studied with traditional approaches.
This expedition is made possible through a grant from the Biological Oceanography Program of the
National Science Foundation (NSF) with additional
support from
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution.
